Solo

Today I let G ride around the block by himself.  It only took him 10 minutes.  I love letting him grow up.  Hallelujah!  G deserves a wonderful life full of competence and confidence.

Sweet brother

G went to a Christmas party for cubs yesterday.  He got a toy via gift exchange and other treats from the leader.  When he got home he was so excited to show the girls and share.  I made them wait until this morning for the candy.   He doesn't just share, he divides it evenly.  I love this boy.  He's awesome.

Super Guy G

Great kid

This is G in his Gator Scientist shirt.  He looks like his grandpa in this shirt.  Go Gators!
G has had the same back pack since... certainly kindergarten and possibly since before then.  Each year we put on a new patch.  Then this summer we got so many patches from the national park Jr. Ranger program.  And G got some patches from the scout camp the last year.  So this year we put on 6 patches!  I figured I'd let him have a new back pack when he goes to Jr. High, but maybe not.  This one is still fine and he only has 16 months of elementary school to go.

survival skills

Today we realized that G was on week 1 of his summer work book and we're 3 weeks into summer break.  We're also planning to take a trip at the end of summer, so he's got 5.5 weeks to do 8 weeks of work.  I went through the booklet and wrote the date for each assignment.  That way he will know how to do a little more each time to avoid having a stressful amount at the end.

I also showed him how to use paperclips and post-it notes to save his place in the workbook.

Reader

G loves to help lP figure things out, even when it makes her scream....

G is reading fairy tale collection on the kindle.  He regularly reads through school reading compilations for fun.

Summer Hair

G asked me to cut his hair.  I was almost done trimming up the sides when he asked me to buzz it.  I started in the middle but hadn't yet gotten the sides off, when G said he was done.  He thought he looked like Scotty Wilbekin.
We went down town and had a lovely night.  G love bB so much.  They're so lucky to have each other.
Last night G was up late.  I told him to go to bed and he said "Sorry Mom, I couldn't concentrate."

play list

The other night G figured out how to move songs into different play lists on the iPod.  P and I didn't even know that was possible.  He was moving all the Gator songs into his playlist.  The playlist is left over from the list I made when he was born.  G said that it was hard to move things but he just kept trying, trying, trying, and he did it.

He also moved the speaker set up from its place near to piano, to be on his desk.  He made it all neat and even moved the plug cover from the new location, to the old location.

I spend a lot of time, too much time, scolding him.  He's such an amazing boy.  So gentle and careful.

Whenever bB falls over, G is there in an instant, raising bB into his arms and rocking him back and forth.  We're so lucky to have him as THE big brother.

I did my best

Last night G went to a birthday party at a skating rink.  He's never used real skates before.  And skating on a smooth surface is really slippery.  I walked him around about 4 times.  The rink had a break with races done by age.  We watched them race.  Then another mom walked him around 5 times.  Later after pizza, cake and presents, G was skating around on his own.  He was making so much progress, but still learning.

The rink took a break to have more races and G went out and joined the 10 and under race.  I watched, scared.  He wobbled his way around and didn't quite make the whole loop before they were telling people to clear the path for the next race.  When he made it over to me he told me that he did his best.

I am so proud of him for having the courage to try things.  He has such courage to try things.  I love him.

Brave boy

G earned $0.25 for buying bread for me. Penny was asleep in the car and it was the bakery thrift store, so a more controlled situation than say, Publix. I asked him to get me bagles, 1 loaf of white bread and 2 loaves of wheat bread.
G: I couldn't find any white bread so I asked the staff.
Me: You asked the staff?
G: I said "Excuse me, do you have any white bread?" and they showed it to me.
Me: Wow, that was so brave. I'm giving you $0.25 more cents!
